Last month Piktochart took part in an exciting event in Singapore: Startup Asia 2014. This event was organized by the good people from Tech In Asia. This time around we weren’t going as participants…

Startup Asia Singapore

This time we were sponsors!

This meant that we could issue a challenge at the Startup Asia Hackathon. A Hackathon is where people come together to create an app to solve a problem within a short period of time – 48 hours in this instance.

Other challenges thrown at the Hackers included creating a location enabled experience to work on a smart watch by Here. And a really fun one by Infocomms Investments.

Our challenge for the Hackathon was to create the Most Innovative Javascript App. The winner of our category will receive a lucrative prize money of SGD$1,000 and an opportunity at an internship with us. Many brilliant ideas and diverse talents were on display during the Hackathon.

It was mind blowing to watch the participants pool their resources and go all out. The talent in the room ranged from students to experienced professionals. There were developers and designers alike.

From the many interesting apps produced in our category, we liked Tyker. It is a day planner with their target audience being parents with young kids. Young parents in Singapore often find it hard to filter through eateries and recreational places which are suitable for their kids. So they will use Tyker to filter and receive recommendations of places to visit. It also has an interactive timeline on which the user can easily arrange their schedule for the day. You can read more about the other winners here.

The Tyker five got their prize money but not the job placements at Piktochart – they are still in school! Maybe next time.

Apart from the Hackathon, there were also a lot of inspirational keynotes and forums going on throughout the event. Among the speakers were the likes of Hugo Barra (Xiaomi), Khailee Ng (500 Startups), Hironao Kunimitsu (Gumi), Dario Meli (HootSuite, Quietly), Akiko Naka (Wantedly).
